Dr. Tomás Magaña receives HRSA grant to support youth-focused peer vaccine education for FACES

FACES for the Future Coalition at the Public Health Institute, was recently awarded a competitive Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant to support youth-focused peer vaccine education.  Leveraging their existing Public Health Youth Corps program, they will be training youth (high school students) from their FACES programs in California, New Mexico, Colorado, and Michigan on how to educate their peers, families, and community members about the COVID vaccine and measures to stop the spread of COVID, including the vaccine. 300 FACES students will participate in the program and will be supported with stipends and certifications in CPR/First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, Stop the Bleed training, and Narcan/Opioid Overdose Intervention training.  This project, called “Local Community-Based Workforce to Increase COVID-19 Vaccine Access” will engage youth as the primary agent to reduce vaccine hesitancy, clarify misinformation about the vaccine, and promote vaccine acceptance in communities that are highly impacted by the pandemic.
