Changes in BMI prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic among children: a retrospective cohort study in San Francisco, CA

Dr. Amy Beck and Dr. Alicia Fernandez published a paper in BMC Pediatrics!  Their study looked at weight gain among San Francisco children before and during the first 18 months of the COVID-19 pandemic. They found increasing BMI during the pandemic compared to the prior two years for all children, with the steepest increases among publicly insured children, Latino children, and Black children.

This resulted in widening disparities in overweight/obesity among publicly insured children in San Francisco.  It highlights the urgent need for pandemic recovery efforts to prioritize access to healthy food and physical activity—especially for children in low-income families.
